How come I cannot extend a sub-clip of a larger piece of media in the time line?

So after making a sub-clip of a piece of media, and dragging it to the time line, I try to extend it. Nothing happens if I attempt to extend it both forewards and backwards. Why is this, and is there any way I can extend said sub-clip in the time line? Help, and thanks in advance.
